Fumonisins have been found worldwide as a contaminant of maize and have been shown to cause liver cancer in experimental rats, pulmonary edema in pigs, and leukoencephalomalacia in horses. High levels of fumonisins in locally grown maize have been found in areas of the world that have a high prevalence of human esophageal cancer, for instance, in South Africa and China. Ochratoxin A is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by several molds of the Aspergillus and Penicillium genera, including Aspergillus ochraceus. Exposure to Ochratoxin A has been linked to Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a chronic kidney disease associated with tumors of the renal system. Impairment of the renal system has also been reported in swine. Ochratoxin A has been frequently detected in human foods and animal feed, mainly in cereals and grain products, although a wide range of commodities has been found to contain the toxin. These include grains, green and roasted coffee, cocoa, spices, and grape derivatives such as raisins, grape juice, and wines. Due to the wide range of commodities found to contain ochratoxin and the health hazards related to the mycotoxin, Hygiena™ offers a variety of Helica™ Ochratoxin ELISAs. T-2 toxin belongs to the type A trichothecene mycotoxins and is one of the most toxic secondary metabolites produced by several fungi of the genus Fusarium. Due to the typical stability of the trichothecene family, T-2 toxin is able to withstand processing procedures and can commonly be found in animal feed and food. Its contamination has been implicated to be responsible for health problems primarily because of its ability to inhibit protein synthesis in both humans and animals.
