Nitrate is the final step in the Nitrogen cycle. Excessive amounts of nitrates in saltwater aquariums facilitate the growth of undesirable organisms such as algae and dinoflagellates. The HI782 Nitrate Checker HC is a simple, accurate, and cost-effective way to measure nitrate from 0.0 up to 75.0 ppm (as NO3–) in your saltwater aquarium.
Using the Zinc Reduction method, a no filter process, The HI782 Nitrate Checker HC measures the concentration of nitrate colormetrically. Hanna Instruments Checker HC provides quick results in four easy steps:

The HI782 was designed to quickly and easily measure nitrate levels for aquarist with higher-than-average nutrient levels. This includes saltwater aquariums that are fish-only or have corals that can tolerate elevated levels of nitrate at 30 ppm or more.
Very low levels of nitrate are critical for many saltwater reef aquariums, as nitrate can cause damage and possible death to certain delicate corals and invertebrates. For this reason, the HI781 offers unmatched precision in the measurement of very low levels of nitrate (0.00 to 5.00 ppm). For freshwater samples, Hanna Instruments recommends using the HI97728 Nitrate Portable Photometer.
HI782 Checker HC is supplied with sample cuvettes with caps (2), marine nitrate starter kit (reagents for 10 tests), 3 mL Pasteur pipette (1), 1.5V AAA battery (1), and instruction manual.

Nitrate is a by-product of the Nitrogen cycle. Excessive amounts of Nitrates in a reef aquarium can promote the growth of undesirable organisms including algae and dinoflagellates while insufficient amounts can lead to starvation in which SPS and other corals will show signs including the loss of color and paleness. The HI781 Nitrate Checker HC is a handheld colorimeter that uses the Beer-Lambert principle to determine the concentration of nitrate colorimetrically. The HI781 is designed specifically to measure low levels of nitrate in a saltwater aquarium. The 0.00 to 5.00 ppm (mg/L) range is ideal for reef aquarium maintenance.

The HI779 Pool Line pocket colorimeter is designed to measure pH in swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas, on a range between 6.3 and 8.6 pH. The HI779 follows the same principle as chemical test kits and pool litmus paper, but with a key advantage. The value is determined electronically, thanks to a light source and a photodetector, which precisely detect the color produced by the sample’s reaction with phenol red. So you no longer have to guess what color your sample is to determine pH. The instrument offers much greater sensitivity than the human eye and can detect pH values with resolutions down to 0.1 pH.
The instrument’s shape fits perfectly in your palm or pocket, and the large LCD display is easy to read. The auto-off function ensures long battery life.
To perform a measurement, fill a cuvette with a water sample, place it in the instrument, and zero the Checker®. Next, add the reagent, which will react with the hydrogen ion, causing a color change. Finally, place the vial in the Checker®, press the button, and read the results. It’s that easy!

HI7754 Pool Line Checker® Handheld Colorimeter is designed for the measurement of alkalinity in swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas. Alkalinity is a very important parameter in monitoring swimming pool water chemistry. Alkalinity is the buffering capacity of a solution to resist a pH change from the addition of an acid or base. This can be a challenge when using common forms of chlorine, in that, as a base when the chlorine is added the pH will increase. As the pH of the water increased above pH 7.4 the chlorine becomes predominately in the hypochlorite form instead of the hypochlorous acid as the pH decreases from pH 7.4. Hypochlorous acid is 100 times more effective as a sanitizer than the hypochlorite form. When water is low in alkalinity the pH will increase as the chlorine is added. When there is adequate alkalinity then as the chlorine is added the base is absorbed and the pH remains the same. Monitoring alkalinity is important in maintaining a stable pH of a swimming pool hot tub, or spa.
The contoured style of these Checkers’ fit in your palm and pocket perfectly and the large LCD is easy to read. The auto shut-off feature assures the battery life will not be drained if you forget to turn it off.
To perform a measurement the instrument a water sample is placed into a cuvette and the meter is zeroed. Next, a reagent is added that will react with alkalinity to produce a distinctive range of colors from yellow to greenish-blue. Last, place the vial into the Checker, press the button and read the results. It’s that easy. It is important to note that if chlorine is in the water sample to be tested then it is necessary to add HI937554-53 chlorine remover first before proceeding with the test.

Nitrification is the biological oxidation of ammonia (ammonium ion) into nitrite followed by the oxidation of the nitrites to nitrates. The first step of this 2-step process is carried out in an aquarium by nitrifying bacteria. During this quick process, the ammonium levels drop while the nitrite levels increase. Since nitrite is just as harmful as ammonia, nitrite levels should be maintained at immeasurable levels. A mature biological filter should be able to keep nitrite levels low. Also, if tap water is to be used in an aquarium, it is recommended that it be tested for phosphate, as well as silicate, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, and alkalinity.
The HI764 Checker® Handheld Colorimeter bridges the gap between simple chemical test kits and professional instrumentation. Chemical test kits are not very accurate, while professional instrumentation can cost hundreds of dollars and can be time-consuming to calibrate and maintain. Hanna Checker®’s are accurate, affordable and easy to use.
To begin measurements, first, zero the instrument with your water sample. Next, add the reagent. Last, place the vial into the Checker®, press the button and read the results. It’s that easy.

The season of maple syrup production spans several months between winter and spring each year. As the days get warmer and the nights stay below freezing, the sap from maple trees begins to flow and tapping begins. At the beginning of production season, the sap produces a lighter, sweeter syrup comprised of sucrose as the main sugar content. As the season progresses and temperatures rise, microorganisms grow and colonize the sap as it is collected. These bacteria, while not harmful, convert part of the sucrose present into invert sugars, glucose and fructose. The level of invert sugars in the sap, as well as the chemical processes that occur during boiling, are responsible for creating a darker and stronger flavored syrup product.
Maple syrup grading standards for the United States and Canada are identical, allowing consumers to easily distinguish between the different grades of syrup, regardless of the place of origin. Grade A maple syrup is classified into four distinct categories:
The HI759 Maple Syrup Digital Grader is a handheld colorimeter designed for quick, accurate determination of Grade A maple syrup. The HI759 is designed as a more accurate alternative to temporary and permanent visual grading kits, providing quick, accurate results in four easy steps.
Step One – Add a sample to the included cuvette(s). Step Two – Insert the glycerol reference cuvette, close the lid, and press the button to zero. Step Three – Remove the glycerol reference cuvette and replace with a sample cuvette. Step Four– Close the lid and press the button. Reading will be taken automatically and the results displayed in percent light transmittance.
This Maple Syrup Digital Grader measures the light transmittance of the syrup and directly displays the percentage results on the large, easy to read LCD display. Located on the back of the meter is a chart referencing the percent light transmittance to the grade. Eliminating the subjectivity of grading by eye and the potential for mislabeling, the HI759 is grading made simple.

The HI739 Checker® HC (Handheld Colorimeter) provides a simple, accurate and cost-effective way to measure fluoride.
Fluoride is one of the very few chemicals that have been shown to cause significant effects in people through drinking water. Fluoride has beneficial effects on teeth at low concentrations in drinking water, but excessive exposure to fluoride in drinking water, or in combination with exposure to fluoride from other sources, can give rise to a number of adverse effects.
Water fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply to reduce tooth decay. Fluoridated water operates on tooth surfaces: in the mouth, it creates low levels of fluoride in saliva, which reduces the rate at which tooth enamel demineralizes and increases the rate at which it remineralizes in the early stages of cavities. A 1994 World Health Organization expert committee suggested a level of fluoride from 0.5 to 1.0 mg/L, depending on climate. Bottled water typically has unknown fluoride levels, and some domestic water filters remove some or all fluoride.
Designed as a more accurate alternative to chemical test kits, the HI739 provides quick, accurate results in four easy steps:

* To zero, mix 2 ml of Reagent A and 8 ml of Reagent B; gently invert 5 times, and wait 1 minute before inserting in the meter and pressing the button.
HI739 Checker® is supplied with (2) sample cuvettes with caps, fluoride HR reagent starter kit for 15 tests (1 bottle of fluoride HR reagent A, 1 bottle of fluoride HR reagent B), (2) 1 mL syringe with tip, pipette, battery, and instructions.

Many water sources can contain iron. The exact concentration will depend on geographic region and whether the water is from a lake, river, or groundwater. Groundwater will typically have the highest since minerals are picked up as rain percolates through the soil to the aquifers below. Iron in swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs present different problems. One problem is staining. Iron will be introduced in a reduced state and as it is exposed to air or other oxidizers, such has chlorine or bromine, the iron will be oxidized causing rust stains. The reaction of iron with oxidizers will create an increase demand for the oxidizers required to maintain a consistent disinfection level. A high demand in chorine could indicate an iron issue in which the water should either be pre-treated before adding to the body of water or treated by filtering it out.
HI7214 Pool Line Checker Handheld Colorimeter is designed for the measurement of iron in swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas within a 0.00 to 5.00 ppm (mg/L) range. The contoured style of these Checkers fit in your palm and pocket perfectly and the large LCD is easy to read. The auto shut-off feature assures the battery life will not be drained if you forget to turn it off.
To perform a measurement the instrument a water sample is placed into a cuvette and the meter is zeroed. Next, a reagent is added that will react with iron to produce an orange color. Last, place the vial into the Checker, press the button and read the results. It’s that easy.

HI7014-25 Pool Line Free Chlorine Checker HC Reagents are high-quality reagents that are pre-measured, allowing users to achieve fast and accurate measurements with the HI7014 Free Chlorine Checker® HC. These reagents follow the DPD Method in which the reaction between chlorine and reagent causes a pink tint in the sample. By simply adding the packet of HI7014-25 reagent to the sample, the reaction will take place and the HI7014 will determine the concentration from the color that is produced. The results will be displayed in ppm (mg/L) of free chlorine. HI7014-25 Pool Line Free Chlorine Checker HC Reagents are designed to be used when measuring swimming pool, hot tub, or spa water that has an expected range of 0.00 to 2.50 ppm free chlorine.

Chlorine is a strong oxidizing agent that is used to keep bodies of water safe from bacterial contamination. Free Chlorine in a swimming pool is usually kept between 1 and 3 ppm (mg/L).
Combined chlorine is the quantity of chlorine that has combined with nitrogen containing compounds. It is much less effective as a disinfectant than free chlorine. Total chlorine is a measurement of both combined chlorine and free chlorine. Ideally there is a balance between free and total chlorine which means that the combined chlorine levels are near zero. The presence of chloramines is undesirable because of the distinctive “swimming pool smell” as well as irritation to the eyes and mucous membranes caused by combined chlorines like dichloramines.
HI7014 Pool Line Checker® Handheld Colorimeter is designed for the measurement of free chlorine in swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas. The contoured style of the Checker fits in your palm and pocket perfectly and the large LCD is easy to read. The auto shut-off feature assures the battery life will not be drained if you forget to turn it off.

To perform a measurement the instrument a water sample is placed into a cuvette and the meter is zeroed. Next, a reagent is added that will react with free chlorine to produce a pink color. Last, place the vial into the Checker, press the button and read the results. It’s that easy.

HI7014 Checker HC is supplied with sample cuvettes with caps (2), free chlorine starter reagent kit for 6 tests, 1.5VAAA battery (1), and instructions.

The HI700 Checker® HC (Handheld Colorimeter) is a simple, accurate and cost effective way to measure ammonia. Present in water as a component of the nitrogen cycle, ammonia is excreted from animals and other organisms such as heterotrophic bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi during the metabolism of proteins and amino acids. Generally present in small quantities in unpolluted waters, higher levels indicate organic pollution, and is toxic to aquatic life. Designed as a more accurate alternative to chemical test kits, the HI700 provides quick, accurate results in four easy steps:

Magnesium is the third most abundant ion in seawater, surpassed only by sodium and chloride. Its abundance is critical in the formation of weak ion pairs with carbonate ions. This allows calcium and carbonate ions to be available for uptake by corals and invertebrates. Low levels of magnesium lead to low or unstable levels of calcium and alkalinity. Signs of lowmagnesium levels include precipitation of calcium as insoluble calcium carbonate and impaired inhabitant growth and health.
