Refractometry is generally speaking the measurement of refractive index and its interpretation under different starting points.
Refractometric measurements can be used for example for purity investigations, sample recognition, dilution control or composition. It’s also used for characterization of substances or for determination of substance data, especially of organic liquids.
Application areas of refractometers
An important area of application is the food-analysis. For example the investigation of oils or fat, sugar and sugar containing substances. Also beer and spirituous beverages belong to the material class, which are investigated by refractometry as well as clinical chemistry. Furthermore, refractometers are used as universal detectors in the investigation of liquids.
Polarimeters are optical instruments utilizing so called polarized light. There are a great number of organic and inorganic substances being “optically active” in their liquid or dissolved state.
Such substances are able to rotate the direction of oscillation of polarized light around a determined angle. This angle of rotation is measured by a polarimeter with highest precision. Thus, a polarimeter will be used to determine the concentration of the optical active substance which is dissolved in an optically inactive liquid.
Color is a decisive criterion when evaluating product quality. Schmidt + Haensch develops, produces and distributes Colorimeter for photometric determination of liquid color (Coloromat 100) as well as for automatic color grading of crystallized sugar by electronic reflectance meter (Saccharoflex 2020).
Both the Coloromat 100 single-beam photometer and the Saccharoflex 2020 reflectance meter have pre-installed methods performing sample analyses conform to ICUMSA standards.

The density meter EDM from SCHMIDT + HAENSCH sets new standards in the density determination of liquids in terms of performance and price.
According to the proven oscillating U-tube principle and the well-known SCHMIDT + HAENSCH quality, it delivers measuring results with the highest precision.
SCHMIDT + HAENSCH is the world’s only manufacturer to offer a replaceable and pre-calibrated measuring cell.
