Listeria Swab is designed to minimize the risk of contamination of work areas or finished products by Listeria spp. in particular L. monocytogenes. It is a simple diagnostic test that can be applied in the environment and on foodstuff where presence of Listeria spp. would be critical. The test is based upon an enhanced Esculin medium formation. The hydrolysis of Esculin by Listeria spp. results in the formation of a distinctive black colored precipitate. The tip of the swab used in this test is composed of Calcium Alginate. This formulation allows the tip to dissolve completely when immersed in the medium, ensuring that all organisms collected during sampling will come into direct contact with the medium.

Escherichia coli and Coliforms are traditionally used as indicator organisms for faecal contamination in water and other environmental sample. Detection of these organisms usually points to poor hygiene. Coliform Isolation Transwab® (MW503) provides a simple method for detecting these organisms. This test consists of a swab for collecting the sample and a tube of indicator medium, packed together in a convenient peel pouch which can be stored at ambient temperature. The coliform swabs show a definite colour change from purple to yellow when coliforms are present. The test is completely self-contained and requires only a means of incubating the swab at 37°C.

The Swab System is designed for sampling on surfaces in the production environment. It consists of a sterile swab in a tube with 10 ml sterile PBS buffer for sampling, transport, and subsequent quantitative detection of present microorganisms in combination with Compact Dry and Easy Plate culture medium plates. Using the swab stick, a surface is sampled. This sample is homogenously mixed in the buffer medium by vigorously shaking the tube. Subsequently, 1ml of the liquid is transferred onto a culture plate using the outlet at the bottom of the tube. The inoculated culture plates are incubated according to their specification and evaluated by counting the number of specific colonies.
